OTHER VOICES

CHINA GIRL

These voices speak volumes. The China diary is that of Sir John Pepys Lister-Kaye and was written during his attempt in 1898 and 1899 to seek a railway concession in Shanghai. It reveals the truth of hints that Laurence Hope visited China (there are, for example, a few ‘Chinese’ poems), and confirms that she and the General had a financial interest in the railway project and spent much of a long period of leave from India with the British Legation in Peking.

Lister-Kaye writes with admiration about LH. When General Nicolson returned to his command in Mhow in central India, she remained in China, most likely to keep an eye on their sizeable investment of £5000. ‘Mrs Nicolson’ is mentioned in his diary many times over a period of eight months. The diary is a typed carbon copy, with a note from his secretary Frances Jones on the cover:

Sent to Sir John’s Godson MJJ Nicolson by Frances E Jones . .

Feb 15 1958.
